- Iwate Hanamaki Airport ~75km (about 1.5hr); most international arrivals come via Tokyo and the shinkansen to Morioka.
- Road Conditions
- Rural roads are ploughed but long, dark and icy between settlements. The high Aspite Line over the plateau closes entirely for winter.

- Take the dorm with meals — winter grocery runs here are a chore without a car. A JR Hanawa Line timetable is worth memorising: trains are few. Onsen etiquette (wash first, no towels in the water) is your ticket to the best part of living here.
