Southern Alps
New Zealand
Breathtaking scenery and uncrowded slopes in the heart of New Zealand's South Island.
Resorts in Southern Alps
The Remarkables
New Zealand
Iconic Queenstown ski area with 384 ha of terrain rising from Lake Wakatipu, set against the dramatic Remarkables mountain range. Known for the Shadow Basin freeride zone and an easy beginner area. About 45 minutes from Queenstown by road. NZ's adventure capital is at the foot of the mountain — bungee, jet boats, and skydiving alongside skiing.
Mt Hutt
New Zealand
Canterbury's premier ski field, consistently voted New Zealand's best ski resort by World Ski Awards. Operated by NZSki, Mt Hutt sits on the eastern edge of the Southern Alps offering incredible panoramic views across the Canterbury Plains to the Pacific Ocean. Known for its early opening (often the first resort in NZ to open) and reliable snow thanks to altitude and snowmaking. The base town of Methven is a charming rural Canterbury community. While the ski area itself is smaller than northern hemisphere resorts, the terrain is varied and the snow quality excellent.
Coronet Peak
New Zealand
Queenstown's closest mountain — about 20 minutes from town centre — with 280 hectares of varied terrain across rolling alpine bowls. Coronet Peak is famous for its Friday and Saturday night skiing operations under floodlights, with panoramic views over Lake Wakatipu and The Remarkables. Operated by NZSki alongside The Remarkables and Mt Hutt, so most staff have multi-mountain access. Workers live in Queenstown rather than on-mountain.
Cardrona
New Zealand
One of New Zealand's premier ski resorts, Cardrona spans 400+ hectares between Wanaka and Queenstown. Famous for its world-class terrain parks, halfpipes, and freeski/snowboard scene — host of the Winter Games NZ and a regular FIS World Cup venue. Family-friendly groomers sit alongside expert chutes off the McDougall ridge. About 50 minutes from Queenstown or 30 minutes from Wanaka by road. Owned and operated by RealNZ.
Treble Cone
New Zealand
The largest ski area in the South Island with 550 hectares of terrain and New Zealand's longest vertical drop at 700m. Treble Cone is famous for steep off-piste, two large alpine basins (Home Basin and Saddle Basin), and unmatched views over Lake Wanaka and the Southern Alps. Mostly intermediate-to-advanced terrain. Sister mountain to Cardrona under RealNZ. About 30 minutes from Wanaka up a winding access road.
Porters
New Zealand
A relaxed Canterbury resort an hour from Christchurch. Family-friendly with terrain across all levels and a strong learner-area focus.

New Zealand
Canterbury club field with classic nutcracker tow lifts and superb off-piste terrain. Volunteer-run, basic facilities, character in spades. About 2 hours from Christchurch.
Mount Cheeseman
New Zealand
Family-oriented club field in the Craigieburn Range with two T-bar lifts and a gentle alpine bowl. About 2 hours from Christchurch.
Broken River

Iconic Canterbury club field reached by an hour of walking from the car park. Steep terrain, deep snow, and zero crowds — a favourite of advanced skiers and snowboarders.
Craigieburn
New Zealand
Steep, advanced terrain in the Craigieburn Range with three nutcracker tows. Famous for powder days and a no-frills authentic Kiwi club-field experience.
Temple Basin
New Zealand
Hike-in club field reached by an hour's walk from the road in Arthur's Pass National Park. No groomers — pure backcountry-style terrain for committed skiers.
Hanmer Springs
New Zealand
Small, low-key family ski area near the Hanmer Springs alpine village (famed for its hot pools). Limited terrain but a great combo of skiing + soaking.
Mount Lyford
New Zealand
A relaxed, family-friendly ski area between Kaikoura and Hanmer Springs. Beginner-friendly with intermediate terrain and a quieter feel than the bigger commercial fields.
Whakapapa
New Zealand
New Zealand's largest ski area, on the slopes of active volcano Mount Ruapehu in Tongariro National Park (a UNESCO dual World Heritage site). Whakapapa spans 550 hectares across the north-western face of the volcano with an iconic learner area at Happy Valley. About 4.5 hours from Auckland and the most accessible major resort to the North Island's biggest population centre. Operated by Ruapehu Alpine Lifts.
Tukino
New Zealand
A remote club field on the eastern flank of Mount Ruapehu, accessed by 4WD. Two tow lifts, basic facilities, fantastic untracked terrain on good days.
Turoa
New Zealand
Sister resort to Whakapapa on the southern slopes of Mount Ruapehu, with New Zealand's longest single-lift vertical drop at 722m. Turoa runs deep into October most years and has the highest summit-accessible terrain in NZ. Operated by Ruapehu Alpine Lifts and shares a season pass with Whakapapa. Ohakune — a vibrant little ski town — is the gateway and the main hub for staff and après life.
